Butcher v supermarket for meats

    Butchers every time.....

....unless it's in the Reduced to Clear section in Tesco at 75% off, like it was today. If I'm paying full price for meat I like the best quality the budget can stretch to but I'm not so rich I can afford to ignore sirloin steaks at ~ £3 for a pack of four, or a humungous piece of roasting pork at £3 reduced from £12, which was on promotion anyway so it was more like a £20 joint. It's bigger than the cat! An organic chicken for £2, steak mince...well suffice to say I filled up the freezer for £30 and I'll buy a really nice ham for Christmas from the butcher with what I've saved on this month's (and next's) meat bill.

that is just what I was going to post! It's good to get to know your butcher as you can also get lots of advice. However, most butchers I know eat LOTS of meat themselves so never say "it's for 6 people" when describing how much you want as you will get massive portions! :rotfl: I have ordered my xmas meat from my local butcher, I get to pick it up on xmas eve and it is taking up room in their fridge and not mine. I still aim to hit my local supermarket on xmas eve for bargains for the freezer though!

"Butcher 1 on the high street - Sirloin steak £19.99/kg, butcher 2 (always a queue, very popular) £23.99/kg."

Sounds like your butchers are filling the tills to buy Xmas presents. A local butcher I was stood outside today had sirloin for £13.99 a kg.

It depends where you live, round here the butchers sell Sirloin steak at £19.99/kg, but on Fridays the farmers market has it at £30/kg. It also has loaves of hand baked bread at £4.99 each!

The simple fact is, if you live in an area where the rich people will pay well over the odds for "fashionable" food then "normal people" can't afford it.

    that is a good point...

but also maybe the diff in price per kg, could be diff breeds of cow...

In our butcher i buy scotish beef ( when i buy a whole silver side, and have it cut up into joints for the freezer ) which is cheaper than the welsh black that he sells at a premium price.

It could be the butcher is buying a breed of cow that takes longer to get ready for the table, so hense the higher price per kg... as most commercial beef cows are bred for quicker maturity.

So dont automatically think the butcher selling the steak for £19.99 per kg is over charging...
Work to live= not live to work
  • cut out the butcher, buy straight from the farm! hehehe
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.
