Comapny cars and fuel

Options
Any help appreciated by you clever tax type people!!!

currently i have a company car tax accordingly via PAYE. Re fuel we claim this at 15p per mile where by we put the fuel in and claim it back retrospectively at the end of the month.

My question is this. If our company were to provide a fuel card to allow us to put fuel in and we then paid the fuel card via our expenses and no personal mileage was used in the vehicle would this attract a tax implication. I feel it wouldnt but any advice would be grateful..

Thanks!!

  • If fuel is provided for personal use then there would be a benefit in kind liability.

I think it would be hard to argue that there was absolutely no personal use in the company car, for there to be no personal use it would have to be left at your workplace and you wouldn't be able to do your normal home to office commute in it...
  • What we used to do for some of our employees is to provide the fuel card, which the company paid for (most of their mileage was business.) The employee then kept detailed mileage logs and repaid the private mileage element in their salary to avoid the fuel BiK.

I think the OP is talking about personal fuel use rather than personal use of a company car.

If you can demonstrate that you do not have any personal use of fuel provided by company then there's no benefit in kind. It doesn't matter whether you pay and claim back business mileage, use a fuel card, a company credit card etc.
