Hi
a friend has a norton CD but he said that there has already been 3 computers that have used it...is there a block preventing another computer using it?
thanks

Block will depend upon the licence single user up to 3 user or commercial .
Personally and reviewing a number of tests the current Norton is far better than its been for the last few years . Free one ?? not on my machine do they go muppets can have them .

yea will be down to the licence...
shame for you as jj says norton is now a decent peice of kit..
people that are slating it are people that remember it from being the resource hungry expensive software it used to be. but them days are long gone now..0 -
I use NIS 2011. I pay for it as its used in connection with a business.... where one might be required to demonstate sufficient virus/hack protection proceedures have been taken. It makes conversations easy - Question what anti-virus are you using - answer NIS 2011 - end of conversation. While I fully accept that people may have differing opinions on the effectiviness of Norton..........the endless repeated twadle that Norton clogs up/slows down your PC is begining to get tiresome. It WAS true that earlier versions of NIS did cause PC slow downs. I however have found NIS 2011, and its predessor NIS2010 do not cause any noticeable effect on my PC - which is several years old and running XP. Perhaps those whose only experience of NIS was from the "bad" years might actually like to try out the latest version before commenting........... In answer to the OP.... you will have bought a licence for installation on a number of PC's. For the retail versions they are either for 1 PC or for 3 PC's. The Norton update server knows exactly how many licences you have activitated and will reject the activitation/virus updates if you attempt to install it on a further PC beyond your licence limit. If you subsequently need to re-install the software the norton server is quite capable of understanding correctly that this is a re-install of an existing licence on an existing machine and not a new "installation". I believe (but am not 100% sure) that a change was made such that if you use the software after the expiring of the licence then the software will stop working... Originally it would continue to work but would not do any updates so would become less current over time.0

You may have a point but why pay for something which is readily available for free??
You may have a strong opinion about my statement but for home use (leaving aside a business), just how many times has Norton jumped to the rescue and protected you from a genuine virus??
Personally I have always used a free AV, tried them all over time and have no real preference TBH.
I cannot abide digging out a CD/DVD just to play a game so have always downloaded No CD Cracks, patches etc, one of the most common areas to find virus infections.
I have never experienced any significant problems and am £xx better off for it.
What is it that you do on a home PC which justifies parting with so much money over something available for absolutely nothing which does the same job.....just as well??0 -
In red above never had one on my Norton , butI don't use dodgy sites, and I use FF+Noscript (especially on the PC which has NIS, cos it's her indoors one and for her work she has to use NIS(or McAfee yuk)) So they pay for her NIS which I use the other two licenses on two other machines(including a Netbook N140. It's no longer as much of a cringe factor compared to 2007/8/9 incarnations. On the other 2 windows m/cs I use Avast. There is no A/V which "will jump to the rescue" if you allow a "genuine" virus under your nose. That's why there is MBAM / Combofix and other excellent free products. You may have a point but why pay for something which is readily available for free??

Ignoring the fact that you get it free, why would you pay for something which you have never fallen victim of? It isn't something you run a risk of so why not simply use the free alternatives?
Paying for nothing?
Yes I have had several, reasons due to the kind of sites I occasionally visit. I have no issues with that and equally have no concerns if I do manage to get infected.
I have plenty of years experience to recover my own system if it goes down for any reason.0 -

As i said "On the other 2 windows m/cs I use Avast" I am just saying if someone wants to pay then Norton aint as bad as it used to be. I Use the other NIS licences for comparative reasons and compatibilty for use alongside OH work use. (and I got her version of NIS x3 at a saving from what was available from their "corporate deal" 24.75 vs 37.99 for one) . Sadly they would not invoice me for 37.99

Quite right, Nortons is very highly rated by the computing press nowadays.
Having said that all software has it's good and bad point. I liked Kaspersky banner advert blocker for instance, but on the other hand it could be prone to crashes on my system.
I get Mcafee for free via O2 at the moment so have shifted to that for now. Not had a problem with it so far, even though again it gets lots of people slagging it off.
TBH I think all comercial anti-virus software has come a long way, because the internet is far more dodgy than it used to be.
Oh and I personally would never use a standard free one, there is a reason they are free.0
