Hi,
I am going to make apple crumble tomorrow (and cranberry possibly, to be more festive). I have a lot frozen cooking apples and was going to use them for the crumble.
However - I have never done this before (used frozen apples, made crumble before!!!). Do I need to defrost the apples before hand (so, take out of the freezer today and put them in the fridge, or should I just use them straight from the freezer?

Hi- personally I would take the apple out tonight as it is quite dense and I think it will cook better. If you wanted to add say frozen blackberries- you could add those from frozen as they are smaller. Delia has a good recipe for crumble- think it is 8oz SR flour, teaspoon baking powder, 5oz sugar and 3oz marg. Combine the ingredients together until they ressemble breadcrumbs and put on your prepared fruit. Cook 180 deg. Gas 4 for 30- 40 minutes.
Hope you enjoy it.0 -
I've made crumble with frozen apples before and its worked out fine.
What i normally do is take frozen apples out of freezer and leave them to thaw while i make the crumble topping.Once you have done the topping place the apples in a pyrex dish. Pour about two tbsp of boiling hat water over them add sugar/ honey etc over apples.
Then place in oven, on gas mark 4.
Hopefully as the apple cook, they should fully defrost and cook perfectly.

I always add a tbls of flour to the sugar before spreading it that way the apple juice thickens and makes the whole thing nicer..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Thanks - I think I might take them out tonight. I have a very nice topping for the crumble with Amaretti biscuits. Don't have recipe to hand, but it always works out very well!Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0
