Very short sighted and unintelligent.
So can I just calrify - you think it is short sighted and unintelligent because it has happened to an individual but it's perfectly acceptable when it's done to a bank ?0 -

Maybe she's mortified that it's bounced and is hiding from you because she is scared.
I'd see if I could use it as a recruitment opportunity. Perhaps offer to do an Avon Party for her friends, so she can earn a commission to pay her bill. End up with good feelings all round.0 -
UPDATE
Put a very polite letter through her door on Sunday. Have heard nothing from her. Have a feeling I'm going to have to get cross with her face to face.
If I can get her to open the door to me, that is!0 -

Good luck. Sadly I know from experience that there are some people in life who are takers. They have no shame and don't seem embarassed that they owe you money. The funny thing is after plucking up the courage to mention to them that they owe me money I can't bring myself to do it again, when they still haven't paid. I still speak to them too as I feel ashamed for asking them for the money. Mad or what:o

One option is take her to the small claims court after saying to here x amount of times even stand outside of her house stounding "this chanque you give me for the Avon products bounces and now I am out of pocket if I dont get the money now or within 24 hours I will have to take legal action."
This means that she will run out with the money and pay you so the street does not think she is a waster.0 -
UPDATE>
Bumped into this lady today who apologised and promised she will pay me in cash tomorrow as she gets paid tomorrow. Also mentioned she has been in hospital and may have cancer of the uterus. Puts £18 in perspective, I guess. Will let you guys know tomorrow whether she makes good on her promise.
Many thanks to all of you for your help.

I hope she is not lying. The person I know who has borrowed money from not just myself but other friends and not repaid has used some awful lies to detract from why she doesn't pay people back. Always a crisis of sorts either her or one of her children are seriously ill and they have to have further investigative tests etc. Bottom line is she's been doing this for over 20 years and they are all fit and healthy.
