Yorkshire bank don't like bankrupts!

I got told by or that i should be ok to carry on using joint account at yorkshire so i thought no more of it until my wife (who is NOT bankrupt but i have joint account with) went to ASDA and found that at the till her card was declined even though there was money in account.
Yorkshire froze account without any warning, Not even a letter or phone call! Very embarrassing.

  • oh dear, thats very embarrasing, unfortuneately, the OR can grant permission to use the account, but its up to the bank or BS to decide if they want to let you. Did you contact them directly? I spoke to lloyds several times in the lead up to BR, and they have been happy for me to continue with my account, but I know from other posts that others have not. I was given advice by CAB who told me to discuss in advance with the bank, and if it looked like they wouldnt continue my account to open a coop or barclays basic account.

  • A law unto themselves these banks. Lack of consistency seems to be the case across the board. The problem is that offering accounts to br seems to be a bit of a box ticking exercise. :(

We have had so many examples on the board where someone has asked their bank/BS in advance of BR if they can keep their account after BR and being told yes, then after BR it being frozen 9/10 that we now recommend that you open new accounts before BR and if the old account remains untouched then that is a bonus.

The problem is the grunts on the phone and in branch are not the financial grunts that make the descions so they just say yes as they want accounts to be open.

Yorkshire Building society are great for BR's as they offer an esaver online which is great but no current account. Us BR's or ex BR's are better off with Barclays and of course the great Co-op Cashminder.
