Will becoming BR make my bank close my account?

Hello,

I have a very basic account with Santander (a visa electron) with no overdraft and have had 2-3 bank charges in the past 6 months.

When i become BR will my bank close my account?? I have regular money going into there.

  • you should probably open an account which is known to be BR friendly - barclays and co-op basic accounts are usually recommended. The OR may allow you to use the santander account, but its up to them if they want to let you, and tbh they are a rubbish bank, you'd be as well to move imho

    Hi and welcome!

It's not so much whether the or make you close your account but whether the bank does.

The only "br friendly" banks are Barclays and Co-op. I changed to coop just before br and they have been excellent. I have a debit card, dds and Internet banking. Branches are a little thin on the ground but you can pay cheques etc in at the post office.

A satisfied customer. Oh and I don't work for them!

I forgot the rubbish bank bit. Still highest number of complaints!
  • yeah, they have really screwed me over, and they will not accept my BR, even though I have told them 8 times - you know what, I don't feel guilty about the money I owe to them.....is that really bad :o :rotfl:

  • You know what Tup, I opened an account with them before I knew I was going br. I also have a credit card with them. They cocked up my transfer of dds, levied loads of charges which they agreed to reverse as they were at fault. They are still chasing me. I have pointed them in the kindly direction of the OR.
  • lol...between them and RBS they have re-set up the direct debit for the mortgage which is on the property which I want repossesing and the huge neg equity going into the BR. Santander keep charging for the returned DD charges, RBS keep adding more charges for unpaid DD also.....I have pointed out to both parties that they can add as many fees as they like, they won't get a penny off me.....and as santander are going to take over RBS they will be charging themselves anyways....ho hum, I suppose its something to have a giggle about in these hard times...after I cried and cried over the mess of it all at first, until I realised I wasn't going to have to pay these ridiculous charges!!!

back to the OP's point, I would guess that bank charges were for some kind of overdraft or unpaid DD etc....in which case I can't imagine they will let you keep the account - sorry

  • I have called the co-op today to get their 'cashminder' account - they are deciding upon my application over the next 2-4 working days and will find out if iv'e been accepted for the account after then. Fingers crossed!

They will close it because you are BR.
