    We don't have an open fire, but are going on holiday in December where we will have a big open fire- would they keep until then?

    Hi

    They keep better if you bung them into sand (the theory is that any tiny maggots will crawl up towards the air, rather than from chestnut to chestnut).

    Are we talking about Horse Chestnut ie conkers or Sweet Chestnuts? If it's conkers you've collected they're inedible, sweet chestnut are lovely roasted. Not a good idea to confuse the two!
  • !!!!! the shells with a fork and put them in the oven until they are soft...we used to leave one unpricked so it would explode! this is meant to tell you when the others are ready, but its not always the best indicator!!
  • Hi, A stupid question.
    Can you freeze them? because we have got a bag full and the OH is the only one who will eat them. Thanks. :confused:

    I've bought frozen sprouts with chestnuts from Waitrose, reduced of course and very nice they were too, so can be done.

    Good idea to shell before freezing;

    put a small slit in the shell of each sweet chest nut and boil for about 10 minutes, drain and they'll peel more easily. As they get cooler they become more difficult again, so just dunk into boiling water for a minute, or leave in original water and reboil.
