I've just heard a Scottish MP say it on the news. But he said it to mean 'without'.
  • Just wondering, if the Scots posting in here are like me, from the Glasgow area... or are outwith? :D;)
    Toto, I
    Don't think we're in
    Kansas anymore...

I wondered why it kept confusing my spellchecker, had no idea it was regional!

It's not regional. It's just not used in common parlance in England anymore. I'm not Scottish and I've only visited Scotland very briefly, but outwith is not a stranger to me.

I hate this word (sorry). I don't see why people can't use 'outside' instead. One of my colleagues uses it in documents, emails and reports ALL THE TIME as she thinks it makes her sound clever. She's the only person I know who uses it!

She also makes up words (I kid you not) and tries not write a word that has fewer than three syllables.

Oh and she tries to shoehorn as many adjectives, adverbs and conjunctions into sentences as possible - her sentences can be six lines long!

Maybe she was obsessed with word counts at university. It's really annoying. Sorry! :o

  • Probably because it can't always be applied in the same context as outside.

I used to use 'outwith' when I was working.

I'm English, but also a lawyer. I suspect the word is not used much in England outwith the legal profession :D

Ah, that may explain it... she studied law at university.

If I come across a word I don't know I use a dictionary but I quite like words & end up reading a few pages of usually obscure words & their definitions.

I have done this too. I'm such a geek lol. :rotfl:

OK, fair point. But it can when she uses it. :rotfl:
