What does 'outwith' mean

  • Ah! I had wondered myself, it seems to be coming up a lot just recently. I thought it was perhaps some kind of fashionable buzzword or something and was surprised as posters here don't tend to go in for that kind of thing. Oddly, it really has just been in the last couple of months that I've been noticing it again and again!

    *is English*

I've never heard it before in my life (grew up in the north of England, now live down south), mind you I haven't seen it used in posts on here either.
  • I had no idea people outside Scotland don't say it. OP did you go and have a wee lie down in a dark room there to recover ;)

I used to use 'outwith' when I was working.

I'm English, but also a lawyer. I suspect the word is not used much in England outwith the legal profession :D
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.

Had you heard of 'with in' before?

That is the opposite of outwith.

If I come across a word I don't know I use a dictionary but I quite like words & end up reading a few pages of usually obscure words & their definitions.

'Outwith' is the sort of peculiar word DH comes out with when MiL is around ... pawky, drookit?, twey, trey, ben the hoose etc are others..... and she thinks Welsh is odd!

It is one of the little phrases that make me think a poster might be Scottish when I read it, and I don't ever hear it down here in the south east. I do find the Scottish dialect comes through more strongly than any other here, I very rarely pick someone out as Welsh just from their phrasing (and I am Welsh).

OP, there are many things in the world worth ranting about, is this really one of them? :rotfl:

I wondered why it kept confusing my spellchecker, had no idea it was regional!
