I am good with technology, mainly software on computers. I can build websites and am currently in negotiations with a friends future business about creating a website for it. She is currently struggling to get off the ground with her business and is discussing going into partnership with some guy she knows. I was hoping on the extra cash from building the website but that won't happen for a while, until things are set up. Not specifically in terms of web design but what are the best ways to make extra cash online?

    Affiliate marketing my friend !

Ebay Partner Network, Amazon Affiliates and Tradedoubler to name but three.

Website design skills are valuable but not as much as people think. It's more important to get a site ranking on the top 3 spots on google's first page than to have a beautifully designed website lingering at position # 765.

So SEO is the way to go in my opinion.

If you really want to carry on down the website design road then go through your yellow pages and see which advertisers do NOT have websites and offer to build them at a reasonable price. You could even use a template that you then re-use.

    Good luck

How do you get into SEO?
  • Search engine optimisation is pretty much as it says in the tin, you optimise your website to make sure search engines such as google and yell see exactly what you think someone would search for.

Then there is the part where you build up links to your website (spamming pretty much), the more decent websites you have a link to your website on, the higher you will appear in search engines.

You should also name your titles and content as if someone was searching for it... IE. Ford Focus Mk2 (2005-) Stereo Removal... someone searching for ford focus stereo will find the site... someone searching for focus mk2 stereo will find the site (and so on....)

The places spiritus suggested are a great to earn a bit of cash... Write reviews for things you have on your website (TV or something) and provide a link to the TV on Amazon... if the customer buys that tv, you'll get a cut of the transaction.... build this up for lots of different products/books/accessories and you can make a few bob :)

I've had a look into these, they look like such bad scams, all of these videos of people saying that they have made thousands every month from affiliate marketing and I should pay them £10 for a book. I think it's the fact people pay £10 in hope your scam works is how you make your money.

I was thinking of contacting a few local businesses that have shops and no websites, making business cards etc. I wasn't sure how successful this would be. Maybe I need some more confidence? :rotfl:

    Thanks. :)

Was it Confusious who once said "if you ask the wrong question you will get the wrong answer" ?

The affiliate programs I listed i.e. Ebay Partner Network, Amazon et al are not scams. However, I'm pretty sure that there ARE some scam sites out there trying to make money from people who want to make money from Ebay, Amazon affiliates etc.

I'm not sure what you've been typing into Google but if you type "Ebay Partner Network" into Google then the first result will take you to Ebay's affiliate program (likewise with Amazon's affiliate program).

They do NOT charge any money to join or try to sell you ebooks for £ 10 or whatever. They are free to join.

The essence of how these affiliate programs work is you can simply insert some code into an existing website. This code normally translates as a banner ad or text ad. Write some relevant content around the ad. Even better is to write a few pages of relevant content and link all your pages and voila !

With Ebay's program you can pull live listings from their auctions and of course you can refine the results so if you have a site about golf clubs then you can choose to display Amazon and/or Ebay ads selling golf clubs.

Agree about contacting local businesses-stay away from business cards (I thought you were a website designer :))

  • yes it looks like, person went to google and maybe got served up some crappy scam adverts - the things that say you can earn 100's a week are all false advertising - I've never understood how companies get away with it - probably sponsored adverts

As above says - with real/honest affiliate programs - you are a commission only agent - you refer people to the website and earn a commission if people buy.

So ignore the scam stuff and go straight to the amazon/ ebay affiliate program - not an advert that says to can make a fortune on amazon or ebay - you need to learn the difference between advertising copy and what you want to do - you want to earn money - do that first - then buy all the ebooks if you want - they might have some useful tips - but EARNING rather than SPENDING or "INVESTING" should be first in your mind.

  • Agreed and don't forget that most people who sell "get rich quick" books or "secrets to online wealth" make most of their income from these books.

In other words, they make their money by telling others how to make money.
