Will 6 Day old Stewing Steak Kill Me?

Had it since Friday, forgot about it, left it in other fridge until now. It was in a bag, looks slightly brown but doesnt really smell of anything... Should I cut my loses and bin it, or will it be ok in the slow cooker? Maybe if I wash it in salty water first and cook it on high for the first couple of hours?

My ex used to work in a butchers and she swore that beef was fine when it went a bit brown - and isn't beef supposed to be hung to mature anyway? I've used braising steak before that's gone brown and it was perfectly fine

  • I was just coming back to say I was going to bin it as on second inspecion there is a very slight twang eminating from it. But I feel reassured and will use it. I just wont let anyone else eat it, OH is veggie anyway. Thanks.

My butcher only sells beef that has been hung for at least 3 weeks, if it's been chilled and there are no signs of mould it will be fine, slow cooking with lots of onions will make a tasty dinner,

  • It will be fine, I have ate meat that has been 5 week + in a camping fridge. Some butcher hang meat for 6 + weeks and it adds favour.
  • Oh dear, I didn't make it... I was going to, I really was. But when I went back to it and saw how sad it looked... and smelt the twang I bottled out.

I'd accepted that it would probably be ok, but I couldn't get over that ikky feeling and knew that thats all I'd be able to think about when eating it.

I'm going to pop into the butchers (not supermarket) on the way home this afternoon and try again!

I have a piece of beef in the fridge - cost me bloomin £4 (tesco delivered 2 of the '3 for £10' packs meaning I had to pay full price for the two, evil toads), and a big chunk of it has gone very brown. The only smell coming from it is a very tasty beefy smell. Any additions to the 'can beef gone brown be eaten' debateplease?
In the meantime do I slow cook in guiness or red wine? Have lush mini red onions to slow cook whole with it too.... yum....:p

    Hi Kaz,

I think if it's in date and smells ok it should be fine. There is more discussion about the colour of raw beef here: brown beef when raw any ideas

You could cook in either but my preference would be the Guinness. This Delia recipe is good and you could substitute the Guiness for the beer.

Thank you pink. I did try to be good and search first (hence the resurrection of an old post) but the search facility will never be as effective as those who know the forum well :-) Thank you for the links - will go and read them now x
