Returning something excluded by the 30 day guarantee.

I purchased a portable dvd player from Argos for a Christmas present which I understood at time of purchase was excluded from the 30 day money back guarantee. However having just tried it out I'm really not very happy with the quality of it. We've had a couple of same priced dvd players which we've been very happy with so I expected it to be of similar quality but it is very cheap and flimsy looking, the buttons are very stiff, the screen is a bit floppy and I found that I was handling it gently because it feels like it would break easily. It does work though so I'm not sure I can return it as faulty. I'm not happy to give it as a present but if I take it back will they refund me or are they more likely to just show me that it works.
Sorry if this is a bit waffly, I hate returning things but if I don't then I'll have wasted £50.
