renting after bankrupcy

Anyone have any trouble renting somewhere? Anyone find it easy?

Have emailed a couple of agents and they either want a guarantor (don't want to ask anyone), or six months rent in advance (Which a can't afford. A could afford three though).

We found it very difficult to find somewhere to rent after we had gone bankrupt for the same reasons as you say: no guarentor and 6 months deposit.

We couldn't use any of our agencies to find our rental house so had to look to rent privately. We used ww.gumtree.com (I think or co.uk) and found a nice little place. I was upfront wih my landlord straight away and been here for nearly 18 months now.

Good luck, no it's not easy but keep your eyes on the private rentals and be first in the queue (there were 6 waitin in case I dropped out of mine. Demand for private rentals seems to be high)
  • As said above I would use Gumtree or perhaps your local housing authority. Six months rent seems a bit steep to me!

  • i too are getting the same deal 6 mths up front which is about 3.5k where i live and considering ive just come off jsa and into a temp job and back on jsa i dont have a hope in hell bankruptcy is still a dirty word which is going to follow us all around.

its just another pathetic way for brs to be penalised "ie"much more choice renting through agents than private land lords" looks like estate agents and lanlords will be losing lots of business over the comin yrs as i am sure we havent seen the worst of the debt bubble just yet!

    hope you get something sorted.
  • If you go to your local council, they will have a housing officer who deals with potential homeless - as I discovered, you don't have to be actually on the street before they help you. I did get a council place in the end, but one of the options he discussed was help from the council with an inital deposit for private rental. I don't know if they would do 6 months, but if you can get 3, maybe they could make up the difference? Has to be worth an ask though I reckon

It's a real pain in the behind. Private renting seems like the most viable option.

When I rented my flat I had to pay £3600 in rent and an £800 deposit. Even pre br I'd never missed a rent payment in 7 years so I'm not sure why I'd be more of a risk than someone not br.
