Debt that's not ours

This is my first post, so please be kind to me.
Back in October 2002 my husband received a bill from Cabot Financial for £1,291.48. The account was with Barclays bank which Cabot purchased, the problem was that my husband has never held an account with Barclays and so phoned them and was told this. After a lot of banging our heads on the wall we finally got a reply that they had the wrong person. The person whose debt this is has the same name as my husband & nearly the same birthday, my husband 1st the other one 6th of the same month & year.
So we thought that was that until December 2002 he received a bill from Link Financial for £729.57 for a Barclaycard account again after a lot of head banging they realised that they have got the wrong person & got a written apology in October 2003.
Then in October 2006 he receives another from Mackenzie Hall for £325.31 for an account with Co-operative bank. This letter said that it is a notice of court action which has put the wind up me but not my husband. He has contacted them and they said that they will post the proof of debt within 4-6 weeks (which we have not received as of yet). All the above debts are not my husbands we are not blacklisted in any way, we have done a credit check and this has come back all ok. My real question is how are these companies getting this information & how can we stop any more companies trying to get money out of us.

I think you can put a small notice on your credit file, to say something like 'the debts of mr xxxxxx date of birth xxxxxx are not mine, we are not the same person'. Which might helpI want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?
