I am considering leaving BT as a phone company for an alternative supplier (my ISP) on a 1 year contract - But am concerned about "return to BT" costs - should this not work out - are there any costs for this ?

No, if the line is LLU'd by your ISP then a 'return to donor' is free, but you will have to take a minimum 12m line rental with BT. And you will probably have a 10 day break in broadband service.
Check if your exchange is LLU for your ISP on www.samknows.com (do an exchange search).
I doubt that you'll regret leaving BT-unless you are leaving for TT or Horange of course!

It is with Opal - the business arm of the dreaded T-T !
And Yes - it is to an LLU connection

Then I suggest you read the T&C's very carefully. Minimum term? ETC levels? Business contracts can be very restrictive-do you really need one?

12 month contract - free wireless router - call display only 55p per month (BT £2.55) - together with unlimited (upto 24Mb) broadband on a low contension ratio line and 500 minutes inclusive calls per month - all for £20.45 - can't go wrong
    CAN I ?

But you imply that you already have your broadband with TT and are just switching your line rental and calls?
Does that price include line rental? If it's a business contract then VAT will be on top.
Personally I wouldn't touch TT with a very long bargepole, but if you are already using them then for some services and it's cheaper...
However bear in mind the temporary loss of broadband service if you want to come back to BT in 12m and the TT connection is LLU.

I'm with macman on this, if TT was the only phone company in the UK I would use 2 tin cans and a piece of string first and probably do better.

I've got some more string if you want it, you supply the cans.

I have had my line with BT for calls for many years - paying them £14.63 per month for what ?
All my calls (up to 500 mins) are free anyway (though my isp)
So this is going to save me around £8 per month - and should result in a faster BB connection (low contention ratio)
    VAT is extra - yes
