can we afford to move out??

I need some help, me and OH have never lived on our own before, always with his dad or friends...

We pay £400 a month in rent, and buy our own food, we also seem to end up buying food for his dad aswell  His dad is in a lot of debt and seems to think we're here to look after him. We refuse to give him any more and he doesnt like this

We want our own place, rented. together we get around £1200 a month minimum. Our outgoings are:
phone contracts: £100 max
loan: £100
dogs: £50 minimum
shopping: £100 max

I think thats it.

could we afford to move out for £850 a month?? I think i know the answer but im not sure....

we're not entitled to any benefits as far as I know

Sid, on some of the other boards here, people put up their SOAs and other people help show them how to live within their means etc. You could try filling in one of those.

Also, you could look into moving into a house share together. That would be cheapter than renting a whole place yourselves.

You'd have less than £850 as you'd need to pay council tax, utilities, tv licence if you want tv, landline if you want that, contents insurance as well as the things that you have mentioned. I expect I've forgotten a few things as well. You also might have trouble finding somewhere that will take dogs assuming they are coming with you.
  • Hi, when my Husband and I moved in together almost 4 years ago our rent on a 1 room flat was £500, council tax £100(ish), insurance (contents etc) £50, utilities £50 (ish), £10 to BT, Internet £22, sky £20
I'm sure there are more outgoings I can't remember!
Also consider 1 off expenses like phone line connection, buying white goods, soft furnishings etc!
Good luck moving out - you'll be thinking about mortgages before you know it!

Edit: I agree with the poster above about the dog. We had places that said no to a hamster!

Of course the dogs would be coming! Always! they're my furkids :) lol I know this is something else to work around when looking for rented accom

I know we'd have less to pay with all the bills, what i mean is can we afford all of that on £850?? Wed be looking at around £450 rent, which is the minimum for a house with a garden in our area. We need a garden for the dogs and we dont want a houseshare, been there (with friends) and that was hellish with people we know! I wont trust anyone with the dogs either, so a houseshare isnt really feasible

Have you considered just saving the extra rent money and buying that bit sooner?
We went first rent to buying in 2.5yrs - if we could have lived with family in that time, we'd have saved £15k in rent, let alone the other bills!

I think it stands for statement of affairs. If you look in the debt free wannabe and mortgage free wannabe sections of the board you'll find them there.

Just a word of caution about trying to rent with dogs. This might be difficult I think... (everywhere I've rented or even looked at have specified no pets)

i dont know that we could get a morgage tbh... my work isnt exactly very offical lol, i get paid cash in hand at the end of every shift, and only earn 400ish a month.... I dont know how getting a morgage would work with how my pay is...

yea a lot of them do state no pets, however quite a few dont, especially recently as landlords seem to be struggling to find tenants. I've been told that I should write up a pet 'CV' to show any prospective LL's as it may help to prove that the dogs are well behaved :rotfl:
