When to engage the solicitor?

Hi all.
Just a quickie, my first Mortgage application is now underway so now next I have to start the conveyance process off. I've got all the inital paperwork and am filling it out.
I’ve been advised that it’s best to do this 1 week after first making the mortgage application. Does this sound right to anyone else or is best to wait until the application has been approved?
Any suggestions?

I engaged my solicitor before I had the mortgage application in. Unless you think your mortgage offer may be declined and you don't want to risk spending more money then there's no need to wait. The solicitor has plenty to do so worth getting them asap on the case.0

wait...so many mortgages are being refused in this climate, put a solicitor on standby by all means but at least wait until you have a mortgage and not just one in principal ...It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0
