So scared

In need of advice. Went home yesterday to find a letter from a balliff regarding council tax. Didn't sleep at all last night, spoke to the bloke this morning and asked for £120 i told him i don't get paid until 15th so he arranged to come round after work next Wednesday to collect £120 and to fill out forms. Do I let him on or will he value my items in my house? So scared never been through this before.
Thanks

Don't let him in. If you need to leave the door to get the money, ask him to just wait, but LOCK the door - he can come into your house if the door is not locked. You can tell him you're going to lock it, but he doesn't need you permission to come in. He can't push past you, but he can come in.

Do you know the full amount owed? Contact the council to get the information. They may say that as the bailiff is now dealing with it it is now out of their hands, but you can point out that you were never notified of any outstanding monies and would like clarification of the total amount owed.

    NO

You must not sign anything at all and you must not open the door.

Ther eason ebing that once you do either of these he can add masses of extra charges to the account, so it will cost you a lot more. And if you fail to pay anytime he can come back into the ghouse anytime he wants and remove stuff. He does not want to do that buyt he will threraten you and add even more charges.

    Do you have a car?

have you rung the Council to qask how much the liability order is for?

Tell them to post the forms. that's what Royal Mail is for. Ask for a reference number, and their address details, you can then communicate with them by post.
Still looking for the plot...... Anyone seen it???

Do better than park it round the corner, he will watch you tootling off down the shops in it and place a nice wheelclamp on it so it can be sold to pay off your arrears.

It needs to be parked WELL away from your house preferably inside and on private property.

    Best of luck

  • I agree with missminx, always deal with it all in writing, this always slows them down. DONT LET HIM IN whatever you do, lock your windows and doors, don't be scared they wont break down the door or anything but if they can see an easy way in they'll come in so just keep everything closed and locked and get on the phone to the council and tell them about the situation and ask if this can be handled a different way if you come to some sort of agreement to repay the debt to them at an affordable amount to you. If they can't help you at all ring National Debtline for free on 0800 008 7968. They're great, tell them the whole story and they will tell you what to do next (all for free) and also they will send you a pack in the post with template letters etc to send to this collections company. Hope this helps :)

Just a thought on this - if it was me i'd want it gone asap even if it meant paying a little extra interest. How is your credit rating? Would you be able to get a 0% creditcard that allows money trasnfers (such as Virgin - only a few cards do this)? If so, you may be able to transfer the funds from the card to your current account and then use that to pay the bill.

Sorry if this muddies the issue, but thought it may be worth mentioning.

Thanks for the reply i wouldn't be able to get a credit card. I am willing to offer £120 each month to clear the debt, but a bit confused as why he needs to come around again with these forms.

i think the bailiff has worked out that you haver got "gullible" written all over your face.

As I have already told you, he wants you to sign either a levy or a Wlaking Possession order, which means he effectively "owns" your goods and can take them any time he wants. He will charge you for this and then add a number of other fees like a van fee of £150.

There is a good website that gives information about bailiffs

You should NEVER allow the bailiff access to your home.

    http://www.bailiffadviceonline.co.uk...g_problems.htm

    http://www.bailiffadviceonline.co.uk/counciltax.htm

The web-site is run by Herbie21 who used to post here but got a lot of flaK.

Ring the Council and ask how much the Liability order is for. You need to know how much the bailiff has added for charges and challenge them.

And please sell that car to your dad, mate or twhoever, for £1 and prevent the bailiff clamping that.
