Is my girlfriend due tax back :)

Options
Me and my girlfriend have been having a silly argument lately and was wondering if you guys could help :)

My girlfriend is on a 14 hour contract in a retail store but usually works 22 to 24 hours a week, so she usually pays tax on her monthly pay cheque.

So she usually earns £7500 a year and has said to me because they average it out though out the year, she has to pay all the tax!

As far as I was aware she should be able to claim the majority back due to everyone not being taxed on the first £6475?

If anyone could confirm if this is correct and that my girlfriend come April should contact HM revenue for a refund

Many thanks!

everyone is entitled to a tax alloawance of 6475 per annum (2009-2010 and 2010-2011 tax years)

which tax year are your talking about?
    what is her tax code?
    what are her earnings
how much tax did she pay
  • If she earns 7500 per annum, then over the year she will be taxed on 1025, so she will pay about 205 in tax.

As the personal allowance is split over the year she should be getting about 17 deducted a month in tax, plus National insurance. If by the end of the year she has paid more tax than that then yes, she should claim it back.

On the PAYE system it should come out more or less right over the year, but she should definitely check come April.

If she is being taxed on her full pay every month then her tax code is probably wrong - it should the "647L" or similar, but if it is "BR" then she will definitely be paying too much tax and she should request a new tax code immediately.
