We recently bought some dive equipment from our local dive store.
It was more expensive but I would still consider it money saving for the following reasons.

Firstly we were given a lot of advice and hopefully the equipement will be both suitable for our needs and be durable. If we bought cheap off the internet we might find we need to replace either because it's not a good fit/not suitable for our needs or is less durable.
Secondly in some cases the advice led to not getting a top of the range item. For example we purchased dive computers locally for £240. now we could have bought them on-line for £185, BUT without the advice we may well have spend £500 or £600, so sometimes the advice is to buy something cheaper in some cases.

Personally I do not always associate COST with moneysaving.
I associate VALUE. That includes suitability, longevity. If you buy something dirt cheap, but then end up replacing then that is not moneysaving. It's a false economy.
    I always lok for VALUE.
