I contacted the payroll dept, and they say its something the government allows them to do so i don't get taxed as much.

Yep. You are being paid via an umbrella company. Here's one mainly targetted at lorry drivers which gives a good idea of what they do and how it works.

The problem I have with them is its used by employers to welch out of paying employers NI and also allows them to wash their hands of employee rights.0 -

my breaks are paid.
but its very hard to get a complete hour without being called as i am the only officer at the shop, so something always crops up
