Hi,

I am looking for a catalogue/website where i can pay off so much every month. I am skint and need to get xmas presents for kids, the problem is i have a bad credit rating and can't seem to get accepted anywhere... Are there any companies i could use that don't do a credit check???

Give your kids the best present they will ever have - a debt free, stress free mother. Explain to that there isn't a lot of money around and just get them something small that you can afford.

I know it's easy for me to write and much harder for you to do but it isn't worth getting into debt for.

    Please rethink Em.

How about promising to take them to somewhere they'd enjoy in the summer? I'm not talking a big holiday or anything - maybe just a day out somewhere - but it gives you chance to save up.

It's really not worth getting yourself into debt over Christmas - if you did get credit, the APR would be horribly high and you'd spend the next year trying to get out of debt before restarting the cycle next year!

I've read a few of your other posts and in them you indicate that you're struggling with your existing financial commitments (exceeding overdraft, loading your credit card and not being able to afford payments on it, getting caught in the payday loan cycle), so do you honestly believe that you'd be able to service a new credit agreement in addition to your existing commitments?

I know this sounds harsh, but your kids have got to learn at some point that money isn't freely available - sounds like you need to also realise this and start budgeting for such things. And I'm not having a dig at you - I've been in the "I've no money for Christmas" situation myself and understand how it makes you feel. You just have to be honest with people - it's surprising how understanding they can be!
My posts are my own opinions based on my experiences and info gathered from sites such as this.

If you spend loads now then you'll regret it in a few months time - do you really have the money spare each month to make the repayments? If you have nothing to spare now then you are going to struggle to find the extra to pay it back. Then, by next Christmas you'll be in a right mess.

Freecycle / charity shops / jumble sales / car boot sales......................... give them a go. Any relatives that can help out?

Also, Poundland and Wilkinson are doing some really great deals at the moment.

When I was a nipper, we made do with bits of coal and an orange, how I loved my coal, cool black coal.

Anyway, most of those dodgy pay monthly things went bust a few years ago didn't they? you still hear people on the radio who are hoping to get their pitifull savings back after all these years, I don't know if anyone has explianed to them that the companies were dissolved and wound up years ago.

  • Don't do it, your kids don't need loads of presents, mine aren't getting much this year, not because I can't afford it, but because there is nothing any of them wants or needs, and I am not prepared to waste money on stuff.

Last year I went mad, it was the first Christmas after their Dad left, I had no spare cash so took advantage of a interest free credit card and a buy now pay later catalogue, I worked it out that I could afford to pay back £100 per month so got a new (totally crap worst purchase of my life) sofa on buy now pay later. Paid all of it back as quickly as I could, long before I needed to, then because I had not allocated my payments to my sofa, got stung for £117 interest, which I am now disputing and getting charged arrears on.

Catalogues are designed to tempt you with things you can't afford, they are more expensive and their interest is appalling, I am normally pretty shrewd and credit to my advantage, but I well and truly messed up!

if you get accepted from a catalogue they will more then likely give you a low limit to start with in september i was accepted by studio 24 for £80 limit i payed the £30 i used in full and it increased the next day my limit to £160

with littlewoods they started me off with £100 i just got little bits for a month or two and they increased my limit to 300 after 3 months

i have just got a great universal catalogue and they have straight away gave me a £600 limit

if you do get accepted by a catalogue i would recomend getting the bare minimum you can (item wise) and also if u are accepted its more then likely going to be a low limit also you can end up paying so much more the longer you take to pay it off

Also at this time of year what you want may not be in stock or it may not be delivered in time
  • hello, i was on my own with my girl and that is where it started from., my life down the debt path. so i know how it feels , the tv and town is full of christmas deals that will save you money, however, next year it will be a bit more and a bit more and before you know it , you are trapped. there is freecycle, really suprising what people wont be needing any more as we all buy too much , please think christmas really is all about spending these days, we feel like we arent a good person lest we have spent xxxxxx£ on whoever, the pleasure that they get from your gift is short lived, you pay all year long for it, sorry for preaching xx
