PLEASE HELP: student loans not coming out of my pay
Hi there,
I am new to this board but would be sooo appreciative if you experts could help me as I am really in a pickle...
My student loans repayments have NOT been coming out my wages. I graduated 2 years ago and am earning £23k so they should have started coming out ages ago but theyre not coming out. I asked my boss to check and sort it out but he is rubbish and still hasn't.
I am really worried in case I contact the Student Loans people and they tell me I have to pay a large chunk cos payments should have started...
What do I do???????????

My company has no HR or pay roll, its tiny and crazy and unorganised.
I have only realised the payments havent been coming out recently as my boss said he'd sorted it when he hadn't, and payments should have started coming out in June, so that's 6 months payments Ive missed which I just cannot afford to pay in one go......0 -
Actually it's not my fault at all.
I started at my place of work in June when payments were due to come out at the end of that month. I informed my boss of this and asked him repeatedly to ensure they were beign deducted from my wage and he assured me that they would come out- he would sort it. I have just found out today that he didn't sort it out- hence why I am trying to sort it out.
So I haven't 'chosen to spend this money on something else' as you so self-righteously put it.
I just wondered if anyone had any experience of a similar experience and if the SLC just begin payments or ask for a back log of payments to be made?0 -
SLC should not ask for the back payments but you should consider putting away the amount your due to pay from your salary into a savings account and make a lump payment. Repayment would be (Gross Salary - 1250) * 9%
Ask your employer if they received a P14 Start notification for you. Did you P45 have a tick in the student loans box, if you didn't have a P45 did you put a tick on the P46 form in the box.
Call SLC they will be able to liase with HM Revenue and Customs to get the payments started.0 -
They can ask for back payments but I have heard of them just being happy to accept that it will take that bit longer to pay off the loan.
When you started the job did you have a P45 or did you complete a P46? If you completed the latter did you tick to say you had SLs to repay?
If you did then your employer should have started to deduct payments automatically as soon as you started earning enough - who operates the payroll? is it your boss or does he have an independant do it for him such as his accountant?A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Your situation sounds normal to me. AFAIK the SLC evaluates your earnings at the end of each tax year. Did you earn more than 15k from April 2009 to April 2010? If you did then payments should have started May 2010. If not your payments will start May 2011.
Either way i've never heard of them demanding back payments.0 -

This is the first month since joining my company I have been able to recieve a pay slip due to my constance pestering of my Boss. Sometimes people work at very messy, un-corporate organisations where there is bad structures in place.0 -
It shouldn't be that much money anyway, maybe £45-50 per month depending on how much of a loan you took out?0

this is incorrect
loan repayments should commence in the april after you finish university and should be deduced from salary in any month that your salary exceeds 1,250 (i.e. 15,000/12).
however the OP has not explained whether a P45 was provided or a P46 was filled and whether they showed that a student loan was held.0 -
Hi - sorry to hear your company is not that well organised - can you work out what you should be paying and start putting that aside for the meantime until it is all sorted - have another word with your boss - if you can't get him to sort it then give the student loans people a call - probably better than worrying about it - I would be surprised if some employer or other hadn't forgotten/messed up before and while it probably is your responsibility to make sure it gets paid it's easy to miss things - hopefully student loans will be reasonable and not want loads of back payments but if they do then I think you should deal with that when you come to it - if you see what I mean - hopefully they will set up a repayment plan with you as the longer you leave it the more it'll worry you.
Good Luck
