Your right to time off for dependants

If you are an 'employee', you have the right to unpaid time off work to deal with emergencies involving a 'dependant' – this could be your husband, wife, partner, child, parent, or anyone living in your household as a member of the family. Someone living a hundred miles away would not be depending on you to take them to the hospital would they.

No they may not be depending on you to take them to the hospital - but if you are the nearest relative they may be depending on you to help them arrange a carer or other support so that they are able to come home rather than remain in the hospital. There may well be someone closer at hand who could do this - but equally there may not be. So it still comes down to the circumstances of the specific issue at hand, not generalities.
