Tax Underpayment from HMRC. Could it be related to Nil Tax code during BR?

Options
Hi

My husband has just received a P800 Tax calculation from HMRC through the post, which states he has underpaid tax for tax year 2009-2010 and owes them £746. They say they will collect the underpayment from April 2011 through his tax code over 12 months.

We went BR in August 2009 and he paid a Nil Tax IPA for 3 months Jan/Feb/March 2010, which roughly equals the amount above.

Could this calculation be wrong and related to the fact he paid the Nil tax IPA? Or could it be a totally separate matter?

As far as we know he has always been on the correct tax code and it just seems like too much of a coincidence? Help please :o

Sounds as if HMRC have sent a few of these out in error.

Thank you Fermi, I ve just read that thread you bumped up.

Really hoping his letter has been sent in error then, he will have to ring them when he gets in.

Thanks again and I will update when we find out. The thought of losing more wages has sent me into despair yet again :o

If it relates to his BR years it will not be due, check his code as returned to normal

The same thing has happened to us = they appear to be claiming back the 0 rated br tax code for the year of our br 2008/09? So it sounds like something stinks at the HMRC

    Thanks for replies :)

My husband rang the tax office earlier to query it, but unfortunately the guy he got through too couldn't help him ! and needs to refer him to another team, who will get back to him shortly!

Will let you alll know what the outcome is.

Now - his tax code definitely returned to normal in April 2010. It was only Nil for Jan/Feb/Mar when he paid the nil tax IPA to Moonbeever.

Are you sure its not one of the 6 million general underpayments that are being sent out (remember the big F**K up) and nothing to do with the NT code, if so the debt would still be covered by the bankruptcy
