in Cutting tax
Hi,
I want to know if I am entitled to claim some sort of assistance with the cost of my accommodation.
I live in York but work in Milton Keynes.
I have a mortgaged house in York which is my main residence and my home.
The cheapest and best solution for me to be able to work in Milton Keynes is to rent a lodge/rent a room in MK, which in have for the past year.
I am in the rented accommodation strictly and only for work. The cost is around £4000 per year.
I am a higher rate tax payer for the first time this year. I have never done a tax return.
Thanks

No. The choice of where you live and work is of no interest to us taxpayers.0

Unless you qualify for detached duty relief, which does not seem to be the case here.0

Did you not notice the "No."
I thought you wanted an answer to your question. Obviously not!0 -

If the accommodation was supplied by your employer you would be liable to pay tax on the benefit.
If you rent out your home in York and rent a home in MK then you would not be able to claim any of the costs of renting in MK against any profit you make.
As your travel is commuting you are not entitled to claim this as business travel.
Best choices would be work nearer to home or live nearer to work!
Other options could be to request working from home a day a week, condensing your working week, ie 4 x 10 hr days rather than 5 x 8 hour days. Or look out for Travelodge £19 per night deals as then you won't have to pay for holiday weeks where as rented rooms want rent 52 weeks a year.0 -
Perfect and useful answer, thanks.0

If you have to work in Milton Keynes ......... there should be an allowance just for that!
Not a 'Betty's' in sight.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
