Help!!!!!
OH has just returned from local farm shop with a small joint of beef and some swede.
Trouble is when I make swede it's OK but it's not as nice as I've had when eating out.
Any tips?
I generally boil it & mash it with a bit of butter & milk but it's nothing special
I'm fed up with the monsoon that's sat over our house all day so I really fancy a lovely roast dinner

I cook the swede and potato together and mash the two with a little butter and milk. (make sure the swede pieces are smaller than the potato they take longer to cook)
I also like Swede and carrot boiled with a little rosemary and mashed together, with some pepper and butter.
Have also tried swede cut into thin slithers and oven roasted, like crisps. Go really well with Parsnip, carrots, sweet potato, and beetroot. Cut thinly mix with some olive oil salt pepper and roast on foiled tray.I had a plan..........its here somewhere.0 -
I always mash with loads of butter, here are some more recipes for seded:

It's really nice roasted, alone or with other root veg, with olive oil, herbs and garlic. It's also very scrummy boiled and mashed with turnip and carrot, lots of butter and black pepper, and (if you like) some very finely chopped raw onion mixed in as you serve it.******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0

If having swede on it's own, I'd use lots of butter and pepper but leave out the milk.
Better still is swede and carrot mashed. I use equal quantities, then drain and again mash with butter and pepper.
My DD (who eats very few veggies) loves this. I've never quite understood why she likes this over other stuff :-)0 -
Just to say thanks for your suggestions!:T
Had Roast Beef - Yummy
HM Yorkshire Puddings
Roast Potatoes
Roast Swede - Never even thought of this before & they were delicious!
carrots
swede with butter & pepper - big improvement on when I've made it before
swede & carrots mashed together - thought I'd died & gone to heaven! Why had I never thought of this one either. Might try it as a variation on cheesey parsnips DD's love (mashed parsnips with cheese bake in oven until cheese melts)
Opened a bottle of wine and OH was worried he'd forgotten an anniversery/Birthday or something:rotfl:0 -
We do the swede and carrot thing too.
I read somewhere about adding a sprinkling of nutmeg to mashed swede which I did for DS the first time I cooked it on it's own and he wolfed it down....it is not of more importance than daily life, which I have an enduring wish to make as useful and beautiful as possible.

MIL's recipe for swede is to chop it into small cubes, boil it with equal quantites of carrots. Halfway through add some finley chopped onion.
When it's all cooked mash together with some freshly ground black pepper and lots of butter.
YUM

I think swede should be mashed with a bit of butter and black pepper, but no other veg as that spoils the lovely swedey flavour. (Just like my mum makes it!)
Mum says that sometimes you just get a swede that's a bit woody, and it doesn't turn out that well, but it's just unlucky. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
I mash mine with some butter. I don't add salt to the water when i'm boiling it but I do add some sugar - less than half a teaspoon. I just do it because it's what my parents and grandparents always did.
I also add sugar to the water when I boil carrots.0
