Cheddar Cheese

I've noticed they sell huge slabs in Costco, but have never bought any because we wouldn't eat that much.

But now I'm going to make homemade pizzas, so my question is, per kg, is Costco cheese cheaper than Tesco Value Mild cheddar cheese or should I just buy the biggest available packs in Tesco?

you can compare the price per 100g online I expect, can you?

personally we use the most mature cheese we can find, as then for pizzas, on potato bakes etc we can get away with only using a small amount but strong flavour IYSWIM. As OH has cholestrol probs we are not meant to have much cheese at all, so the more mature the less you need. But saying that we dont use a lot so would never really buy the big blocks.

Perosnally I dont rate the value cheese, as its doesnt really taste strong enough. We usually have a look at whats on offer there is usually some sort of Catherdral city or similar on offer at tescos be it bogof or 1.3rd off etc.

OH is my 'pizza chef' and he tried cheddar on our pizzas once. He then turned up his nose and said that the cheese had burnt and reverted to the old mozarella.

  • I buy the biggest packs and then grate most of it to freeze. Cheese that has been frozen gets quite crumbly but this is perfect for pizzas , cottage pie, cheese based sauces etc. I only buy the extra mature cheddar as I find it lasts longer as I use less to get the right taste.

i would say before u buy a huge block of value chedder, try some mature cheese. as we find u need much less mature then u do mild. thus making it go much further , even if it is slightly dearer at first.

i have never grated cheese and frozen it . but it does seem a very good way of storing cheese if bought in bulk. i think if i ever bought a huge quanity of cheese then i would def try this.
