Christmas present idea

I thought there was a craft board on here somewhere but I can't find it so I am turning to you guys for help as I know lots of people on the OS board do crafty bits and bobs.

I have been asked by my cousin (11 year old girl) for something crafty for Christmas. She wants a new craft and I am struggling to think of something.

She love modelling clay (but doesn't want anymore)
She used to love hama beads, but has moved on.

I did consider buying her a cheap sewing machine but I really think this is a false investment. So you wonderful people I have £30 to spend to get someone into a new craft - any ideas?!?

  • i would go with cross stitch as i love it even now and whilst its so much easier to learn if you have someone who knows how to do it, it is possible to self teach. you can buy kits varying from £5 to £££££ depending on what you want.

i think the board your wanting is the christmas and yueltide board as its recently been renamed, but there is loads of crafety things on there.

Good idea about the cross stitch! Also it seems really cheap!

Perhaps if other people know of other cheap craft ideas like that I could make up a little trial pack - sort of a try and see what you like idea.

    Love it x x

If you have a Range store near you you'll be spoilt for choice - it has a HUUUUUGE craft section!!

Also, The Works or even Tesco (near the stationery/party things) have good little packs of crafty things.

The Book People (look online) also sell really good books - sometimes with little starter packs - of crafts.

Hope some of these ideas help!

How about jewellery making? You can buy and assortment of beads, threads and findings. A small pair of nose pliers would be good to go with it too.

Jewellery making - maybe a mix of buttons and beads plus wire, clasps, pliers etc

Do you have a Hobbycraft near you-they sell lots of kits.Would she like card making or scrap booking?

My 13 year old niece has just taken up patchwork. The hand sewn type. You could buy templates and some pretty material or make her up a sewing kit in a pretty basket with needles, threads and some scissors.

I enjoy soap making. It is creative but easy, and suitable for a teenager. Not so good for younger children as the soap can get dangerously hot if over-microwaved. I wrote an in-depth tutorial on instructables.com and I am sure there must be more on there by now - search for 'melt and pour soap'.

I saw they had beginners kits in Hobbycraft last time I was there.

I loved candle making when I was about that age. You can get good starter kits or books and spend the rest on materials.

Wow! Loads of ideas here, I think the jewellery making set is a fab idea as is the candles and soap! Lots to think about.
