If a debt turns up after 8 yrs if you have to pay it?

My friend has called me this morning to say she has just got a letter from a company that wants £1,800.00 from 1998 :eek:

Any help gratefully received.

for an ordinary debt, i.e. not a mortgage, government (tax) or subject to a CCJ, then if there has been no contact for six years the debt is not enforceable

best to start any letter to them ' i acknowledge no debt' and then say that even if the alleged debt was yours then it is statute barred'

It's not the date of the debt that the six years start from, it's the date of the last contact you had about the debt, last payment, letter, call etc.
