  • If you check your payslip (I'm assuming you're employed) there should be a 3 digit tax district reference - often as part of the employers PAYE reference. Tap that into here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/local/individuals/index.htm and phone them with your NI number (also on your payslip) and they should be able to help you.

Use the coding notice for 2006-07 that HMRC would have issued to you prior to April 06.

They're unlikely to write to you just to furnish proof of ID.

They aren't sent out routinely to everyone though.

That's correct. But there are over 16M issued in the Bulk coding run each year - so most get them.

But the real point to the OP was that they won't issue one for a CC ID, as that involves a spend from the 'public' purse for personal reasons.

It has been known actually! We get requests for proof of identity re EMA grants as well! Oh ..and lets not forget the time I received a call asking how to cook a Sainsburys pie (poor old bloke only ever spoke to people from the tax office!)
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

No it is not true that "most" people get one. I don't know a single person who got one this year, not even my husband who has offsets against his personal allowance which is the usual reason for sending them out.

Does one deduce you are having a bad day? Or is it simply the username asserting itself?;)

The only mandate HMRC have for issuing a P2 is where the code has changed since the last one issued. And that is exclusive of Budget changes.

But they do not adhere to the minimum requirement and do a bulk issue in mid - January of each year which exceeds 16M cases. And Post Office are most grateful as this single mailing is one of the largest in the UK and, despite Mailsort discounts, generates them circa £3.5M.

This 16m bulk issue can be measured against just over 22M cases where a Code is applicable. Which proportion would amount, in most people's eyes, to the fact that 'most' people receive an annual P2.

The fact your husband does not get one .... is hardly a statistically viable argument? I get one every year and so does my wife - but I am not arguing, as a consequence, that therefore implies 100% coverage. Simply the fact - that 'most' people in the PAYE threshold receive a P2 from the bulk issue every year

I'm sure you get the applications - but tell me you decline with thanks? Mind you - with Banks storing Statements and all my utility bills online, it's getting nigh on impossible to prove who you are. Just grateful that any accounts I open never seem to ask for ID. Must be deemed wholly trustworthy .... or simply beyond the pale.

Love the pie one. Just think how much you would miss that direct public contact if ever HMRC opened its portals to Email. And it just goes to show how much greater respect you have ... than you believe from the inside.

Move over Jamie Oliver - the HMRC dinner ladies are here!:p

I was with Bossyboots on this. I really didn't think that most peple got a P2, so I looked it up and lo-and-behold, your 16m was an underestimate. HMRC say they send out 20m P2s, and that there are 29.5m taxpayers. So as a proportion of taxpayers, most do indeed get a P2. As a proportion of working-age people (37m), again just about most people get one, but as a proportion of all adults (48m) most people don't get one. So it just depends on what your population is.;)

    Phrased quite carefully :-
    .........where a Code is applicable
    ;)

My figures were from the bulk issue and related data 2 years ago. You did well to find recent figures - wasn't aware they now published them
