Can't get notebook to work wirelessly. Can anyone help please?

Options
I have recently acquired a new Samsung N130 notebook. I was looking forward to being able to use it wirelessly, but for some reason it will only work if it it plugged in to my O2 broadband box.

When I got it, I had help to find the password on my O2 broadband box so that I could connect to my own broadband.

However, I just get the message that a network cable is unplugged until I connect the netbook to the broaband box using the wire.

Even when I do this, I still get a message to say that I have a bad signal or something, and that I may not be able to connect to the internet etc.

My brother has been able to connect the netbook wirelessly at his house to his internet provider (BT I think).

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be and how I can rectify it please?

My brother thinks it may be some kind of configuration problem, but doesn't know what or how to sort it.

Many thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give.

  • Go to Network and Sharing centre in control panel and connect to network , see if it sees your wireless router.

Is it a new one or has it been 'passed on' (or bought 2nd hand)?

If new, it should connect by wire out of the box and just need the password for WiFi. If not new, probably some comms management software which needs changing or removing. As it connects wirelessly to a BT box, maybe some BT-branded stuff getting in the way- anything 'obvious' on the desktop or task-bar?

Thanks for your replies. Netbook refuses to connect wirelessly no matter what I do.

Netbook is brand new, and I can't see anything obvious on the task management or tool bar.

Will have to keep asking around to see if ther's anything that can be done to make it work wirelessly.

    Try this

Start /right click computer/manage/Device manager/Network adapters : are there any yellow exclamation marks ? is there 2 devices in there? ( ie wireless adapter & ethernet adapter )

if there is a wlan /wireless adapter uninstall and reboot , it should reinstall on reboot .

Should be wireless if it's an 02 Thomson router. But is the wireless function enabled in the router interface? You can't connect to a wireless network unless you have first set one up on the router (unless there is a default network already installed).
Can you see your wireless network (or any others in the neighbourhood) when you try to connect?
It's normal to see the 'network cable unplugged' message when you unplug your ethernet connection.

Sorry macman - noticed that when I re-read the OP (4th paragraph was throwing me). Have removed my post.

Wireless light on the router? Wireless light on the netbook? A friends one turns off everytime it switches off.
Needs to be enabled every time.

Do you search for wireless networks? Insert the correct SSID and passkey, Not the routers serial number.

When connected with a wire use your internet browser to open the routers settings.
