Salary Payment on or around a certain date

Hi, my employer wants to put in the contract of employment the following statement:
"You will normally be paid on or around the 21st of each month"
This is so if they do not pay on the 21st, but lets say the 23rd for what ever reason, then they are not liable for any bank charges staff get as a result. Can they do this? Or are there employment laws to protect staff.
Thanks

It'a normally where the 21st falls on a weekend and you can't get paid. Should then move to next working day.
Do they have a history of paying late?0 -
Yes, and they are trying to cover themselves when it happens. Also even if it falls on a Wednesday and they pay on the Thursday or Friday, they still say on or around so it will not make them liable. Surely this cannot be permitted.0

Everywhere I've ever worked its always been 'on or before' a certain date and if there's a bank holiday or its a Sunday they pay you early.
Doesn't seem right to me, how do you define 'around', if you set your direct debits for the 25th or the 28th is that safe?0 -
That is what I mean. That is what work are telling me to do...... move my direct debits but surely they should have a set cut off date and stick to it.0

That's very naughty, but I can't seem to find an exact law. You see if you are paid late that is classed as unlawful deduction, as a previous poster mentioned contracts are normally worded on or before or by a certain date. Where I work contracts say you will be paid by 25th but we actually pay on 24th so if for whatever reason the BACS fail (has happened before) We can rectify it by 25th.0
