Crack open the bubbly
We today paid our last mortage payment (albeit some of the mortgage is still being offset by savings) that see us as the proud owners of two houses one that is worth £300k and the other £175k in Turkey which has transformed my work life balance and the bext thing we have done. Certainly we could have bought a bigger or better located main house when we bbought the holiday home 4 years ago but we love where we live in terms of its position and convenience to my work (less than a three minute drive) and the £50k per year we have pumped into buying it may not be the most financial savvy purchases but will help us hopefully retire earliesh by most standards in 2019 at 53 and 56 respectively in the warm Aegean sun lazing in the pool
Even more proud is that it is the culmination of 30 years hard work. We havent been left money by anyone, I didnt go to uni and get a degree but worked my way up after a-levels doing my professional exams and we have got there by saving sensibly enjoying holidays and always living within our means which have grown considerably in the last 10 years but we maintained our spending levels at pre 2004 levels
Put my first post in the retirement planning forum today as that is the next big challenge. Another 4.5 years of very hard saving with the odd luxury holiday thrown in to keep us sane so we can pack it all in and enjoy the fruits of our labour
