There is a thread on the forum at the moment, on DJ's, that makes me wonder why anyone would ever bother to come on this part of the forum. Sigh. Completely bonkers.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

It reminded me of when - on old hifis - you'd do a speaker test in which the sound would come out of the left speaker then the right then the left (and on and on) where you always knew it was part of the same system.
ETA: I did want to ask why the dj in question would keep the garage door if the conversion was legitimate as opposed to covert, but felt that socks should be kept in pairs and they were having too good a time to raise a logical opinion. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I haven't updated on my reading for a while. I've never read a Terry Pratchett book. They just don't appeal.
Anyways, last book I told everyone I finished, was the Paul Roland Crimes of JtR book. At the time, Viva asked about:
Which was the book I'd decided to read after Roland!
(<<<<<whistling twilight zone theme tune...)
This book actually focuses(sp?) on the vast amount of correspondence realting to the JtR scare, with over 200 letters surviving from the samples recieved by the police. There are a significant number of reproductions of the letters, as so many had additional drawings on them. The most famous letters, are the so-called Dear Boss letter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dear_Boss_letter
followed by the Saucy Jacky postcard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saucy_Jacky_postcard, (both of which are likely to be from the same source), and the From Hell/Lusk letter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_Hell_letter.
Most modern theories doubt any of the letters genuinely came from the murderer, however the Dear Boss letter gave the nom de plume.
I then read
Which was the first book to suggest Dr Francis Tumblety was JtR. A decent book, but falls down on the fact that it puts forward a 5'11" suspect in a case where pretty much every witness description relates to a person 5'5"-5'7".
I then read
I never knew that Newton had worked at the Royal Mint! This was a very enjoyable read, as it gives a very brief outline of Newtons development, with the main crux of the book being a kind of detective story of how Newton strove to tackle counterfeiting. There are several chapters which were particularly fascinating outlining the risks to the currency, the potential risks to England & the economy as a result of this. Very relevant to this board!:) Definitely recommended.
I then read this:
It is a book referred to in a book I read at university (called The Minds I - great book that!). I love the art of Patrick Hughes, and according loved this book. Having seen his art, it is no suprise that Hughes is interested in paradoxes and logic.
I then read:
I'd had it for years & never got around to it. Funny in some strange ways - spends a lot of the book highlighting how deeply he believes in god, then 3/4 of the way through mentions all these affairs which had been ommitted when he discussed that time frame earlier. Whilst enjoyable, and comes across as very humble, could do with being more detailed.
Back to form, I then read
This books seeks to highlight an oft made claim by senior police at the time that JtR was known, & indeed incarcerated just after the death of Mary Jane Kelly. I did really enjoy this book, and especially its maps, and some of the detail such as the beats of police constables. It makes a fair case, however was published around 1987-88 (the centenary) and the last third feels a little rushed, and this means that detailed examination of 3 people the author claims to actually be the same person who was JtR & this was known by the police.
I'm now onto this:
I'm half way through. This book was updated & revised last year. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Oh, & I forgot to say, tomorrow, I'm off to see Jerry Sadowitz!:cool:It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0

Crikey,
You're a more prolific reader than me jelly. Through all of that I've just managed to plow through the History of the World in 100 Objects: one single book:o.
PS: who is Jerry Sadowitz? Never heard of him. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I have a lot of spare time & no friends...:(
Jerry Sadowitz is a comedian & allegedley one of the best close up card magicians ever.
His magic is apparently something to behold.
His comedy is very, very close to the bone.
He was in the Shamens video for Ebeneezer Goode:DIt's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
