Stratford upon Avon ideas please

Hi, Ive booked a couple of days to Stratford upon Avon - just wanted opinions on good places to visit there.

I have looked online and like the look of Falstaffs and Butterfly World.

Also any good pubs (I'm a traditional sort of roast dinner, meat and veg type lol) and any good individual gift shops - I need to get a few stocking filler type items for my mum but am fed up with all the chain store run of the mill type toiletries style gifts.

  • The Shakespeare houses are interesting.

Try to get to the theatre if possible.

Boat trip down the river (chance to ogle the beautiful houses).

    Picnic by the riverbank.

Lots of gift (tat) shops. I found the Shakespeare bookshop most interesting and could have spent a fortune in there.

I ate in a really nice place in Swan Street this year - can't remember the name of it though!

Warwick is also really close by and nice for a visit.

I have to wholeheartedly recommend Matilda, at the RSC Courtyard Theatre in Stratford. It's a new musical adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, written by Dennis Kelly (wrote Pulling and other great stuff) with music by Tim Minchin (who is AMAZING).

I went on the first night of the previews, and absolutely, thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm going again in December and taking a group of 17 of my family! It is so funny and energetic, but also touching and heart warming. It is very 'Dahl' and the cast is superb.

Great for grown up audiences, with or without kids. Honestly - check it out. It's got nothing but positive feedback from what I've seen - press night is this coming Thursday 9th

I sound like I work for them or something, but just an enthusiastic audience member!
  • Hi jostenning,
i was born in Stratford & still live here
a few years ago i used to drive for Guide Friday ( open top tour buses),now its a company called City Sightseeing.
they start a tour from a pub called The Pen & Parchment, not sure of the prices now, they take you on a tour of Stratford & you can buy a ticket for all 5 Shakespeare Properties.
also Falstaff s is good, you get given 5 old pennies to use in the old machines there, watch out for the staircase some people have reported that they have felt as if someone was pushing them down the stairs.
theres also the Butterfly Farm across the river.depending on when you come to Stratford you can have a river cruiser tour, again, cant remember the prices.

at nighttime, not every night there there is a ghost tour( a walking tour).
plenty of gift shops & Restaurant's.

if you would like to know anything else, send me a private message & i could maybe post you some information from all of the places of interest.
