Not Getting Interviews Because of Location

My OH has always ended up with jobs which are far away from where he is currently living - the last time we moved 250 miles.

He always makes the point that he is applying for the job because it is a job he is really interested in and therefore he's willing to make the necessary relocation.

I think you need to make sure you state in your application why you want to a job which is so far away from where you currently live - is it the job, family, friends, partner, love of surfing etc...?

This is one of those occasions where you SHOULD lie!

I'd tell them your partner lives there, and you're sick of the long distance so want to move to be closer to him, but need to get a job first as you don't want to sponge of him.

So, OP then gets the interview based on this lie and has to deal with Qs about where her partner works etc. Then what? She gets the job and has to carry on the fantasy or fake a break up? Not really a good idea in the long term is it?

I'd say that you are moving to the area but are waiting to choose a property until you have secured a post as you want to be sure to find the most convenient place to live for the new work location - shows reason for lack of local address.

Or you could stay in a B&B for a couple of months and use this as your contact address. At this time of year I bet you could secure a good deal on rates.

So you're all really saying: Lie.

    OK. I'll lie.

I don't like lieing because I can't. I'm a rubbish liar. All part of the ASD thing - ask a direct question, you get a direct/truthful answer.
no, just make it clear up front that you are planning to relocate to their area. why is none of their business!

I live in Brighton, and when applying for a job in London I was asked at interview when I would move up there. I told them I wouldn't move to London. They started questioning whether that commuting was viable, and I told them - politely and laughing - that as long as I was at work on time where I lived was of no concern to them. I got the job...!
:rotfl: hundreds of people commute from Brighton to London! it's a breeze ...

Organisations do need to be careful of the sorts of restrictions they put on jobs; at best they may not get the better person for the job, and at worst they may be indirectly discriminating (unlikely, but not impossible). I bet the advert didn't say "only locals should apply"!!!

Best of luck anyway, PN. :)

I'm in a similar position with regard to a current job I'm applying for (it's 97 miles or two hours drive away). The interview is on Wed but I have already been on houseshare.co.uk, spareroom.co.uk websites and got a provisional place sorted out so that I can say on Wed 'I already have a place just 2 miles up the road....' Steal their thunder and plan ahead.

I do agree with the poster who said that, sometimes, the reason given to an unsuccessful candidate may be hogwash - because they can't give the real reason because it is discriminatory / illegal. They have to put something down that seems valid so they are not challenged. I've seen it done - and by big employers.

Edit - I would add that it was my plan to stay in the area during the week anyway as the room will only cost me £70 per week whereas the cheapest train fare is £42 return not taking into account the wasted time sitting in a car / on the train.

THOUSANDS make the commute every day. I know; I did it for 11 years. 11 long, long years... ;)

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

Id be tempted to say "I have some friends in the area"

..and I'd be tempted to say (phrased in different language obviously) that I was moving because Cornwall is "Poor pay Central". I think Cornwall rates as the lowest paying county in the country - so perfectly understandable that you would be moving away from it...
  • I am currently re-locating approximately 400miles, when I went for the interview for the job I have been offered, I stressed that I was travelling the 400miles quite frequently and was looking for a job in my current field which would stop the travelling.

I was also able to tell the employer that I had a home and provided a local address.

Luckily the relocation didn't seem to be an issue.

Dont Lie. Lies always come back to haunt you!!

    G
One day some company will do what they say they will do and charge a fair charge.:T

Not doing the opposite of that which they promise and charge you a fortune for the privileged. :(

    Or maybe not:mad:
  • With all due respect OP, I think you are making a big deal about this being a "lie". You are intending to move there, you are not intending to state you live there, get the job and then commute daily without moving.

At the end of the day, recruitment is cutthroat and you need to look after yourself so sometimes a little white lie is purely to prevent someone else from creating a problem that isn't there (ie. them thinking you have commuting issues).
