What do i do now

I have about £30,000 of debts

I got divorced and sold my house 5 years ago i should of paid my debts off but didnt.

I have moved 4 times since divorecd from cornwall to wiltshite to yorshire to cleveland and now i live on a friends boat. after another relationship break up

I am disabled and recieve a War pension a works pension and incapacity total about £1000 a month.

I arrange sometime ago token payment to my creditors when i was on less income.

I pay maintenace and the mooring fees for the boat and i infact enjoy the lifestyle.

I have recently found out that baliffs have been calling at my ex wifes house and i am now not sure what i should do i dont believe creditors know where i am.

Any suggestion appreciated

oh dear! i think it's probably a good idea to list the debts you have, do you kow them all? just to make sure you know what your playing with, then make an soa (see southernscousers sitcky post at the top of this thread) and we can see if we can help you organise your finances.

erm this is presuming you wish to actually pay off your debts rather than hide from the bailiffs...

two thumbs for taking the step to post though, the worst is over :o

How come electric free? Also, what about other items of expenditure eg food, cleaning materials, food, clothing, insurance, etc.

    Hello Holes in my pockets

I am not sure I understand why you have been paying only £1 to each creditor for the last three years when you appear to be able to pay more

Certainly if they asked for a statement of affairs from you, you'd have to pay more. Perhaps you can write to them all and improve your payment. That will look good and you will be debt free quicker.

One last thing, are those figures the debts three years ago or currently? As you said they don't know where you live, I wonder if you have up to date statements

Sorry for the questions but it's important to have the full picture.

  • When i arranged £1 payments they did want more but i was on less income and i told them what i would pay they eventually accepted it took a long time and i had to be hard faced which i am normally not.

The electric is included in the boat mooring fees as is the water.

    Food i spend about £200 a month
    mobile phone £40 a month
    Clothing i dont spend much

I probably have a few hundred pound left at the end of the month but i use that to see my kids 300miles away.

So spare cash is stopping me from going bankrupt

Hence Dont know what to do now

I expect you could probably trim at least £50 off your food bill and I'd look for a cheaper phone deal. When your contract expires take a "loyalty discount" instead of the upgrade and this'll save you £15 per month or so. Why not see if there are cheaper ways to get to see your kids? Megabus starts at £1 each way if you book ahead.

Perhaps you could look at it as money available to pay debts off rather than 'spare cash'
