Good afternoon.
I am also interested in becoming a freelance writer.
My topic area is health and fitness (yes, probably the most competitive market there is). However, I don’t want to write from a Men’s Health point-of-view (i.e. sensationalist claptrap).
In my everyday life I am an Exercise Physiologist, educated up to Master degree level. I run research projects for the Police . My specialism is therefore using exercise for health and occupational health (including for the business itself; improving productivity and saving them money).
The thing about exercise is that it should not be taken as a stand-alone subject, impacting of course on emotional health, nutritional etc. Too much time is spent talking about all these weird and wonderful exercises missing out the basic, logical information.
An example – resistance training. Some say it raises blood pressure, some say it reduces blood pressure, but no one really talks about the intensity of the exercise to elicit those results.
That’s what I want to try and get across, so, I guess it would fit into the medical, general fitness, occupational health and business domains.
Anyone any suggestions of good ways to start/places to try.
Through my work I am writing a few articles for a national magazine, so might have some real samples soon.
Thanks
B

Hi there, Burnsie
The good news is your area of expertise is one of "high demand". If you are willing to hustle, the work will definitely be there.
As soon as you have some samples available, get yourself an online presence (a free blog is fine) to showcase your writing for prospective clients. This is important, so invest some time to see how other freelancers present themselves. Then ... hustle! Because if you are going to make any real money writing, you will need to be as creative in your approach to finding work as you are in your articles.
Contact all the specialist magazines/newspapers with your credentials plus ideas for features. Also, there will literally be thousands of websites all vying for a better google position - and the best way to achieve that is through consistent and compelling content. Contact webmasters, and offer your services. I have secured a couple of lucrative clients doing just that.
Here are some recommended websites for tips on finding work.
