Nail ridges

Is there anything I can do to get rid of ridges in my nails?

Apart from the odd scraggy cuticle my nails have always been pretty good, and grow to a decent length but recently they look awful cause of the ridges.

I have tried buffing once a week, applying OPI nail envy (everyday!) but didnt really seem to do anything.

My mum has had this problem for years, is it something I can blame her for:rotfl:?

My nails used to be the one thing i was proud of and now even they look gross, any ideas?

Hi, think your mum is to blame! I used to look at my mum's nails when I was young and think they were odd. Guess what, I have them now.
Buffing does seem to help but I think it is just genetics. Fingers crossed the dementia misses a generation!

I have the sam issue but I use one of those buffers with the 4 sides to it and use it once a week (or more likely when I remember) When I've ised it, my nails look like glass - very smooth. I then use nail polish (coloured or clear)

other than buffing them down regularly and use a ridge filling base coat (Nails Inc do one called Harley Street) there's not much you can do really! I've inherited them too :(

I seem to recall that nail ridges CAN be a sign of a deficiency in your diet, though they are more than likely genetic if your Mom has them. Perhaps Auntie Google could help you figure out if something has changed in your diet recently which could be causing it.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
  • Thanks for all the replies, seems I have to keep buffing away while blaming my mother!!

  • Your nails also detioriate as you get older and become ridged. Mine have started to get vertical ridges as I've got a bit older. I think horizontal ridges are from damage to the nail bed.

I think it's a case of disguising them as opposed to curing them.

Good excuse to try out some new nail varnishes!!
