Claiming Jobseekers and self employment

Hi,

I am currently receiving jobseekers allowance, and have been offered one days freelance work, I am registered as self employed, but haven't really ever done any work as self employed ( I have only worked once or twice as self employed in 5 years). When I claimed Jobseekers I did'nt tell them about the self employed side as I had just been laid off from a full time job and had not been actively self employed or doing any self employed work (even though I was registered, I have just left this dormant as there was no money or activity involved).

The work will take me a day to do (working from home) I understand they may take money off me for that day or week, but wondered how I stand after this.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you haven't told DWP of your self employed status then your claim can be sanctioned, as well as any possible fraud which may have taken place, also i would advise you tell the jobcentre as soon as you can about your self employment status.

I am not sure how much will be taken from your claim but i think it's around a pound for every hour you work but don't quote me on this.
  • Thanks for your reply, just to make it clear, I haven't worked self employed whilst claiming jobseekers without telling DWP, I have been registered as self employed, but have'nt actually taken any money through been self employed or conducted any activity whilst claiming JSA. I am looking for full time employed work, but the reason I left myself self employed was in case I was ever offered any freelance work, like now. Last time I was made redundant I worked 2 days freelance work and I told the jobcentre before I did this, and they took me off JSA for those 2 days which was fine, then I rang back and they put me back on, and that went fine. So I assume I just have to declare my earnings for that at the end of the year? I am considering doing the same again, but I really need to be sure.

Go for it i think everything would be fine as long as you declare everything.

your allowed to earn £5 a week before money will be deducted, but you need to declare every penny
