In our house we cook all our meals from scratch and make packed lunches but are still noticing the price of everything rising!
I tend to use red/yellow/orange peppers to add bulk to sauces and also put them into wraps for packed lunches. But they are so expensive now but I am not sure what I can replace them with?
(I do also use celery, carrot etc in our sauces too). any ideas?

I use frozen sliced peppers for sauces, they're about £1 a bag, a lot cheaper than fresh. Just buy fresh when they're on offer, they were 3 for 64p in L!dl at the weekend, a huge treat:)
Agreed fresh ones are nice to have, I'm never sure what to add to pate sandwiches for OH as he doesn't like tomato in sarnies, and sliced pepper is lovely. He just has to go without.
Btw I add grated carrot to tinned tuna for sandwiches, would that help for your wraps?0 -
Maybe slightly off topic but I have to say frozen leeks are great for soups.0

I buy the bags of frozen peppers for cooking, they are good value. Use bags of frozen peppers? Peppers are really cheap at the market atm(recently i've got bags of 10-12 for £1), see if you casn buy a few bags and you can freeze some yourself.
Instead of peppers in sandwiches or wraps, for a nice crunch try finely shredded cabbage, carrot and a little onion, marinated in lemon juice, mustard and salad cream/mayo. It's a delicious crunchy salad with a little coleslaw style dressing.Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0 -
you could add slices of butter nut squash that makes a nice addition to things like currys etc. not sure how much they are as i never look but there more to them than a pepper
i wouldnt reccomned it in a sandwich tho lol0 -
The Value bags of peppers from MrT and MrS are pretty good...usually four or five decent size but slightly misshapen peppers for £1 or so. I never buy any other sort.Val.0

I tend to buy a lot in season and then chop and freeze and use as and when.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife

Peppers have always been expensive... I've been too tight to buy them for several years now, except for special occasions.0

if you have a market nearby you can usually get them much cheaper, our closest in Kingston sells them 3 for £1.Anna :beer:0

My local market does a bowl for £1- I got 7 romano's today for £1 and there were loads of bowls of yellow one and red ones as well.
There are still plenty coming from spain and the likes, not finished yet, better get some more and freeze them just in case:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
