  • Not wanting to sound thick, but where is the group?

Our house needs help!!! I need help!

    ~Lynn;)

Hi, Lynn! Come and join us here and here!

I started with shining my sink, then progressed to "getting dressed" (I kid you not! ) I receive the e-mails, and then pick and choose what's relevant to me.

I love the cameraderie of the Challenge threads - you are not alone.

  • About five years ago I was at my wits end. I was working full time, studying and found keeping up with the housework as well very hard. :o I couldn't understand how I could organise my class but not my house.

Then I found flylady and her 'fifteen minutes at a time'. I would love to be able to say that my house is now an oasis of peace and calm :rotfl: It isn't but it is much much better. The best thing is that I no longer feel overwhelmed by it all:T I have my routines which get most things done almost automatically.

My downfall is that during my time away from work I am easily sidetracked into other projects "a butterfly mind" is how someone described me:o Try though, cos it is free and what have you got to lose apart from the clutter?

Like others I found FLYlady through MSE and it's changed the way I do things. I was becoming obsessed with having a clean and tidy house but was overwhelmed working part-time with a young son (now home full-time and seem to have less time for housework!). I always seemed to be doing housework but was never satisfied with the results.

Working through FLYlady babysteps and routines I now feel in control of my home but it doesn't control me and I have more time to spend with family and do things I want to do.

With FLYlady take the advice you need and leave the rest, i.e. adapt it to suit your situation. You might find the emails a bit patronising or American but the basics are there - establish simple daily routines/habits that will help you keep on top of things, work methodically through your home in the 'zones' to deep clean and declutter, never take on too much and loads can be achieved in 15 mins. She also advises getting dressed to shoes (!) meaning you'll never answer the door in your pjs while cleaning the kitchen floor!

I'm not perfect, I fall off the wagon regularly (today is not a good day!) but going back to basics with Flylady I normally get back into control readlly quickly.

Give it a go and join the guys on here who are really supportive and lots of fun.

  • yes its all common sense really - but then again so is eating healthily and getting enough sleep but that doesnt mean we always do it does it? I think fly lady is great (as others said - if you can ignore the americanism).

Leave out what you dont think will work but DO use a timer! if you dont you will either try and guess the amount of time - and do far too much, or you will spend the whole time looking at the clock and won't get anything done.

The best thing flylady has taught me (so far) is how much can be done in small amounts of time and that it doesnt matter if you dont get it finished. When i was just starting my mum and dad rang to say they were taking me out for lunch and would be round in 30mins. Usually I would have got dressed and then paced around the house til they arrived. Instead I sorted my bag ready to go out and then got on with things. In the end they were 20mins late but I didnt mind because I had got so much done.

I found Flylady via MSE about six months ago when we were slowly drowning in mess and clutter. A huge amount of it is about attitude change. Instead of moaning that no one else lifts a finger and being depressed about the mess I do a bit each day and keep on top of it. I did a major room by room clean at the start a la Wobblebottoms brilliant efforts on the half term thread, and then I have maintained it most of the time since. I have the one per day summary e-mail. Sometimes I read it, sometimes I dont.

I do not let myself switch the laptop on in the morning until the boys are changed and dressed, and until I am dressed (no shoes though - doesnt she know it wears out the carpet faster!), and the kitchen and bathroom are back to clean. Takes very little time really. We have another 5 minute tidyup at lunchtime when DS2 has his sleep, again no computer till it is tidy then it doesnt matter if he only has a short sleep, 5 minute tidy before DH comes home, then as soon as the boys go to bed, before I can sit down with a drink I get the living room and kitchen back to tidy and the dw on - fifteen minutes if hoovering is needed. Two minutes at bedtime to wipe the bathroom and kitchen.

We all have odd blips, and I find the support on here far more useful than the Flylady e-mails. I had a free half hour at lunchtime, caught up on half term challenge and ended up cleaning the car out instead of wasting it on the laptop.

It has worked very well for me and mine, I work part time and have two little boys. Others work full time or are SAHM and it seems to work well for anyone with the right attitude.

  • I have followed flylady for about 2 years now. The main things I have learnt is the "you can do anything for 15 minutes" mantra, so even when I look at the dump of my spare room, I do actually give myself 15 mins and it is amazing what I can get done in that time - ie tidy it all up!
It is a very American style site but don't let that put you off - I have changed my subscription so that I receive all the emails from that day in a long list - much better than loads of emails every day.

It is hard to follow routine exactly when you are working or at home with a baby (that is me now!) but the basic principles have really helped me keep on top of the chores in the house.

Can anyone give me a hyperlink to Wobblebottoms thread please?
