I have several friends who live in Brockley in self-contained accommodation, either renting or owning - paying similar amounts to those you quote, and now the "London Overground" is actually a formal entity in its own right, with decent interchanges with the tube (easiest way is via Canada Water on the Jubilee Line) it's one of the best value places I know of in London.michaelvintner wrote: »My brother lives in Brockley (on the London Overground) and rents a one bedroom flat for £550 a month (that is mates rate though) the flat is a bit dated and could do with a bit of modernising but even on the open market it would go for around £650 a month.

I just like arguing.I assumed that you must be in the same situation as GHOULS R US ........ owning a large number of BTL properties and being in a desperate position in a falling market.
I have no mortgage on one property, now less than 1.5 times joint income on another, and being overpaid rapidly thanks to Merv's low rates. I've never mewed, I have savings and a decent pension, and I have no other debt.
My local market has just reached a new peak, and even at the trough in early 2009 prices remained at early 2007 levels.

There is an issue with economic immigrants from developing countries who believe Britain is the land of milk and honey, but at least you expect our own youth to be more realistic.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Never got into Friends myself, but don't they live in a "rent controlled" flat through relatives? Not sure if this is specific to New York state, or prevalent across the US.They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -
That would make sense. When you rent in NY, your rent increases are set at the start.... and after about 10 years your rent is about half what new renters' rents are. See can live in zone 2 cheaply.
