Dishwasher tablets - how much do you use?

Well I've tried cheapo washing powder instead of dishwasher powder and yes it works but for the last few loads I've tried a new product:-
fresh air!
It started when I had a full load of more or less "fresh" (ie not dried on) dirty plates etc and I just put them on 35 degree cycle with no powder and they all came out clean!:D
tried it twice more now - including proper dried on food plates and they are all coming out sparkly on 35 degree cycle! Well except for the rim of one pan and that never comes out clean even with dishwasher powder.
So I was wondering if anyone else has tried this? I suppose I could be using up residue powder but I would have thought it would have run out after a couple of loads.
Really curious as to wether we really need the powder at all (except perhaps with the real yucky stuff and then I've often found the dishwasher didn't clean them properly anyway!)
