Car hire Belfast to Dublin

Wonderful Aer Lingus have cancelled my lovely Belfast International Flight and rescheduled it to Dublin. This means I need to get to Dublin International by 4am on 16th December!

BUT I fly back from my destination to Belfast International. Its therefore not feasible to drive to Dublin as our car will have to be left there and there wont be a car waiting for us at Belfast International when we get back! (The joys of trying to book clever separate flights have backfired!!)

Has anyone rented a car one way between Belfast and Dublin? All the ones I have tried whack on a surcharge for one way and for INTERNATIONAL CROSS BORDER travel (I ask you!!!) and for a 1 and a half hour journey it looks like it might cost me £150!!!!!

I have looked at the bus, but because its a school concert that night the earliest bus we can get is 11pm which gets us to Dublin at 1.15 am - and Ive no idea what we could do between 1.15am and 4am when we have to check in - its just not worth booking a hotel room for 2 3/4 hours!!! WHAT A NIGHTMARE - any advice or thoughts very welcome!!
Im knitty, Im nutty, but I dont know anyone called Nora. :p

  • Have you checked how much a taxi would be? I have heard taxi drivers talk about having to do airport runs to Dublin, but I can't remember how much they charge! Would probably be cheaper than hiring a car. I think I would be inclined to get the 11.00pm bus and take a pillow, earplugs and a book.
  • Could u not get a friend to drop you off and promise to repay the favour sometime? Or the Travellodge @ Dublin Airport is €29 for a room if u book early enough and get taxi from there (about 1 mile). Its basci but clean, have stayed there several times when getting early morning flights.
  • Thanks guys - think we have decided to drive down at silly-am and park the car and leave it for the few days we are away, then hubby can get the bus down when we get back and collect the car...a bit of hassle, but cheaper all round really...drat....was hoping to get cheap one way Ferrari hire ;)
