“Steeling ourselves against the city traffic, we made our way to the urban fringe and the calming heather moors. Already in a nationally designated landscape, we strode out beside the city’s drinking water then branched off on a level, curving track past a curious stone tower. Later I learned that the reason for its being lies underground. A couple of miles to the west, people were getting to grips with the local rock. But we were content to simply look at a large gritstone outcrop said to resemble a part of the human anatomy
I think it is in the Peak District, near Sheffield
Any ideas?

Hi Weeowen
I like the idea of the Peak District - it may be around Buxton though? I'm doing a bit of googling and there appears to be a well used walker's water fountain there, as well as a tower (Solomon's Temple).
Not sure on the rocky outcrops though - I'm more familiar with the ones local to me (at Brimham!). Perhaps someone else can help a bit more?
I'm presuming they want more than 'Buxton' as an answer?
eta there's a Winking Man outcrop around there? link0 -
Location is Hallam Moor just North of Redmires res. (OS ref SK260859 approx) See THIS PHOTO taken from the opposite direction.
The gritstone outcrop is Head Stone at SK255873, and the climbers are on Stanage Edge.
Haven't found any further details on the tower.0 -
Cheers to both of you for the help.I'll edit the title.0
