LOL I have just read your comments about brewery tours - As we have three breweries within five minutes walk we could be permanently pickled! :):):)

    Hi Galtizz-

I was wondering what you do for food when you go camping- I suppose if you go abroad you mostly eat out as it would be hard to cook?

Do you know if a lot of the campsites in eg France and Italy have swimming pools and entertainmnt?

Also, this is prob a stupid question, but what do you do about keeping your clothes etc secure when you go out- can you "lock" tents somehow?

As you can tell, I have never been camping in my life!

Hi Sarah, we have only been camping once but plan to go away a lot this summer. We have a two ring gas stove and also disposable barbecues (bought for 50p each at the end of last season :) ) Last year we made a chicken curry and rice on the gas hob for 5 adults and 4 children and also a chicken and pasta thing with vegetables in a tomato sauce. Of course you can do the good old fry up. You can basically make anything you would at home on the hob, and bbq the meat.

I can't answer you about tents as i've never been in one either, but last year we stopped on a site in France in a mobile home- but you could also hire a tent or take your own.

It had a swimming pool, a bar, grocery shop,laundrette,take-away pizzas in the evening.

They also ran a free kids club that children from age 4 could be left at. You had to tell staff where you'd be and couldn't leave the campsite. We went when world cup was on so one night the kids club ran at the same time England were playing.

Yes, a lot of campsites in France are great and have swimming pools and entertainment, a lot like our Haven sites.

Along with swiming pools, bars, resturaunts, really nice shower blocks, laundry's, well stocked shops they also often have barbeques which you can use. I stopped in a site in Italy which had shared kitchens, it had fridges, freezers, lots of hobs, sinks and lots of equipment - frying pans saucepans etc. This isn't the norm though but it is worth asking before you book.

Because I'm carrying everything on trains and buses I cook things on a single calor gaz 'hob' It folds up really small and is light. You are limited as to what you can eat though, It needs to be one pan so I tend to stick to pasta meals (cook the pasta in water then add sauce i.e tinned tomatoes and veg).

If you are renting a car from the airport or driving to France you can get some really posh cookers with a grill and 2 hobs and you can do full meals.

I'm not sure if you can take the gaz on the plane so I always buy it when I get there. (Not a problem).

Give it a go, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. If you stay on a cheap enough site you can probably afford to eat out every night for the same price as a self catering holiday abroad. :)
