Travel to work issues

Hi

I am applying for jobs, but as it has started to snow rather badly in my area.. and only having a scooter i am paying more attention as to where the jobs are.

The ONE job i really want to happen for me is based in a place where buses don't run to. and the roads are really bad.

Other jobs though more local to me eg cleaning jobs as a temporary mesure until the weather is better. want experience (which i don't have - not in a career sense - and only want people to work for 2 hours or so, and at minimum wage, by the time ive forked out a weeks bus ticket, thats a fair chunk of my wage gone.

Im kind of stuck as to what im supposed to do now.

If i can't get to the places i need to get to (jobs id take permanatley) as the lack of transport, and the local jobs i can do, don't pay enough, should i still apply for the jobs i want in the remote area's or not

Im stuck as to what to do... as im really desperate for a job and money, but at the same time - if i apply for a job and it comes off,and then can't get their,i don't want to frustrate any future employer and ruin any possible chance of any future employment with that company.

and at the same time.. i can't afford to have my jobseekers allowance stopped other wise il have no personal transport sliming down my chances of being able to get to these remote places..

What do i do?

Thanks in advance

Rob

I would say apply for the permanent jobs - if you get one then you might be able to improve your transport prospects and you never know, someone might be able to offer you a lift for the first few weeks until you can sort out something more permanent. Would it be an option to take a bus to the nearest stop then walk/cycle/scoot or something from there?
You can always mention it to your potential employers if they offer you a job - don't phrase it as a problem, just ask their advice on local transport/car share scheme or similar to demonstrate that you are committed to the job and want to ensure that you have reliable transport.
  • i had hoped that before but i would still have a 7 mile walk to the bus stops n work.

Ive applied for the permanent job- so.. if it does come off il just have to go stupidly slow on the snowy icy roads and stay on the main roads where they have been gritted, as the remote places where i will hopefully have the job is europes largets industrial estate and all on main roads so. shouldn't be too much of an issue - only on the quite'r smaller roads. - other than that id just have to ask the agency if they could offer some form of temporary transport due to the weather.
if not.. - just use the scooter until i know the people who i work with well enough and hopefully some kind person may offer a lift (if theyre local enough) - don't mind paying petrol money.. just don't fancy coming off the bike.

now studying my theory test (again) for the car.. took it a while back and failed hazard perception by 2 points.. :/

    Thanks

    Rob :)

At the end of the day, a bit of snow shouldn't deter you from applying for these jobs. It's not always snowing, and it's only ever around for a few weeks at a time. Unless your whole journey is back roads, they are generally gritted.

If it was me, I'd wrap up really warm and take my chances on the scooter :)

    Good luck.
  • yeah thats the plan :) but.. i did however go out tonight to find the place that i have applied to work at, and also went out to see what the bike is like in this snow n slush..

it is mainly all back roads from where i live.. and it isn't well.. - nice..
go over 15mph and the bike wants to lay down in the snow.. brake.. it locks up (pants were full after that) and setting off from junctions.. thats just a waste of time lol just wheel spins haha - and its usually sideways leaving junctions too :rotfl:

but.. so long as it keeps me going toward getting the job and getting me their.. im not fussed

Just apply for jobs and see what happens, for all you know there could be an employee who lives close by or who passes a point where you could be picked up from

    good luck
  • hhmm this issue is a biggie..

tried riding the scooter earlier today.. (yes...we still have snow here.. and its all iced over like glass!) and well.. can't even get out of the drive.. let alone the street.

and my route is mainly backroads.. due to having only a CBT and where i live..
i would have to start at 6am and finish at 6pm. (its getting their in the first place that is the issue. the recruitment agency have canceled the interview due to the weather, last thursday)
i could make it to the interview with the help of my father (time depending) - i would take the bus but.. they run no-where near to where i need to be.. i.e 3 mile walk at least...
the real problem is.. how can i get their on my first day...
due to the employer being a recruitment agency i could ask for help in travel, but unless they can ask someone who works their already that lives nearby i fail to see how they can help.
i don't fancy smashing my bike up or ripping a leg off trying to get their.. but at the same time.. i really need this job.
only thing is.. since i was invited to the interview and it then being canceled i hadn't applied for any other jobs,as again, travel is limited and have already been told their is a vacancy fixed at this particular company, they haven't rung back yet with a time or date (if no phone call tomorow i will be phoning back later in the afternoon)
getting their is the main issue, can't ask parents to drop me off as dad works afternoon shift and doesn't go to bed till gone 12pm (which is normal for his lifestyle due to work) mum can't as she starts work early, can't get their by public transport and my own transport would be pure suicidal.
will the jobcentre still allow me my jobseekers allowance (if the company hasn't yet decided upon an interview time due to the weather?) as i am due to go to my local jobcentre on thursday, but already have an interview, but for a time which is unknown

    what else can i do?

    Regards

    Rob

I can't see why your JSA would be affected. Last winter I was in a similar position to you. Interviews were being cancelled and I couldn't even get out to sign on. I still got paid. Eventually I started a job in February by which time the weather had mostly cleared. I was worried about what this next winter would bring but it turns out the company has a flexible approach to 'snow days'. But also if you can just get through this winter but decide its too difficult, you can apply for other jobs. In my experience it is easier to find work from a position of employment.
But if you can't get there you can't get there. Again you should not be penalised.

    For the love of god....

The amount of time in a year that snow affects travel to work in the UK is lucky to get into a double figure amount of days.

To be honest because of the masses of snow we get every year you are better off staying at home closing the curtains and playing your PS3 on you 50 inch plasma smoking your weed and keep taking you JSA rather than getting a job.

    For the love of God

One day some company will do what they say they will do and charge a fair charge.:T

Not doing the opposite of that which they promise and charge you a fortune for the privileged. :(

    Or maybe not:mad:
  • sorry?

I merely asking for help/advice on what im supposed to do at the moment

plus.. heres a tip for anyone out their

    " DON'T USE DREAMTEAM RECRUITMENT!!!"

    A) I can't stand being stuck in the house
    B) I don't fleece the jobcentre ( I do look for work just if i can't get their... i can't get their!)
    C) weed... drugs? who the hell said anything about drugs... if i were you id keep my petty minded insults to myself.

Their is nothing wrong in asking for help on an advice forum,What i did was ask for help or advice on what i should do.

I have explained my problem (the fact being "would you ride a scooter over 2-3 inch thick ice for 6 miles unable to brake, corner, accelerate?" no... i doubt it

Would you walk 3+ miles to get to work (after catching a bus.. in -2 OR lower) probably not...

I think this forum has a problem with its users. protected via the keyboard.. verbal words make all the difference.

    Now...

    Back to the topic..

Last week i applied for the job.. the recruitment agency phoned me back on thursday to say the interview on friday has been canceled-waited monday to see if they would ring back or not.. (no they didn't) so i phoned up... 4-5 times.. with messages being left for the manager (think the call advisor was annoyed at the fact i was still having to phone in to get hold of the manager)
Still... today no phone call to talk about.. and the recruitment agency have as you have probably gathered.. gone rather quite (now.. in this perdicement.. other than trying to phone and hopefully getting an answer.. what else can i do? as the job in question was advertised on a few websites... to which now they have disapeared..

    what to do?

    Thanks in advance

    Rob
